Clinton, Illinois. (WAND)- Many Ameren customers are shocked to see their monthly bills. Ameren’s local customer, Katlin Coakley, couldn’t believe the bill was double hers.
“How does that happen? How is it going to be $170 to $344 a month when people aren’t home?” asked Coakley.
Ameren first notified customers in April and November 2022, predicting higher energy prices. Months later, customers have no peace of mind.
Ameren Illinois Communications Director Tucker Kennedy explained the reason for the increase.
“The main reason customers continue to experience high energy bills is because of the high cost of energy supply. Electricity and natural gas commodities themselves, these prices have increased significantly,” Kennedy said. says.
Ameren does not control energy prices. Kennedy told WAND they were electricity delivery people. Ameren does not generate any form of energy for its customers, it simply provides energy from another party.
“We know these costs, these high supply costs, are not our fault. Ameren in Illinois is a delivery only utility, which means we also generate a kilowatt of energy. No, a lot of people don’t know that,” Kennedy explained.
However, customers are likely to see some easing in the coming months. Kennedy said the price of natural gas has slowly started to fall. Many families hope that it will lead to lower electricity bills.
