CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) – An Appalachian miner and son’s tweet at a basketball game in Kentucky went viral and the family is now featured on NBC’s TODAY.
The tweet, posted by John Calipari, a basketball coach at the University of Kentucky, showed a number of users wearing a mining uniform, now identified as Michael McGuire, for his love and devotion to his son. I express my gratitude to my father. Some even called him “Dad of the Year”.
In an interview today, Michael’s wife Molly explained the role basketball plays in their family’s life and how it’s a bonding experience between her husband and their 3-year-old son Easton, pictured in the original post. explained.

According to TODAY, Michael has a long job six days a week as a coal miner 40 minutes away from the stadium, but he just “didn’t want to miss it.”
The entire McGuire family, including their 1-year-old daughter Lynley, will attend the match at Rupp Arena as VIPs thanks to Coach Cal’s tickets.
