Audubon — Audubon County Sheriff’s Department officials are warning the community about a scam involving the popular social media app Snapchat.
In reported cases, scammers use fake accounts to follow users and attempt to obtain inappropriate photos (nude photos). Once the scammers have the photos, they demand payment and threaten to release the photos.
In some cases, a predator impersonates a teenage girl and reaches out to a teenage boy to befriend and follow each other, while the scammer demands inappropriate photos and later demands payment. or publish a photo.
Audubon Sheriff’s Department officials are reminding all Snapchat users to only follow you with people you know and not follow people you don’t know. They also urge parents to remind their children of this.
Snapchat scams aren’t the only recent reports.
The Shenandoah Police Department reported another scam. Officials there said the department had not raised money for the new uniforms and had not called people individually. Please call 246-3512. Thank you,” the representative said.
