Castlemaine Farmers Market recruits volunteers to welcome visitors to the market each month, provide information and support over 60 diverse vendors.
Held on the first Sunday of every month, the market first appealed to committee member Pamela Heywood.
“As a self-professed foodie, I volunteered at my local farmer’s market, which was my passion,” she said.
“We had to shop and buy locally and support farmers and producers.”
Pam said the market is a great way to make new friends and for new Castlemaine residents to get to know the community.
“I didn’t know anyone in Castlemaine when I moved in from the interstate,” she said.
“I became a volunteer at the information center because it gave me the opportunity to connect with the community, learn more about the area and make friends.”
For Pam, volunteering has improved her quality of life and helped her through the dark days of COVID-19 lockdown.
“Volunteering improves mental and physical health. We socially distanced and stayed outside when there were restrictions. Markets were essential,” she said.
Now Pam is calling on locals to support farmers and producers.
“We need volunteers at our monthly farmers market. You only have an hour or so of your time. We will sell raffle tickets, provide local information, and offer food tours proposed in the coming months. I might be able to help you prepare for ,” she said.
Pam wants to start her food tour at the market with a guide taking her through the stalls and hearing stories from fascinating vendors. A locally led trip through the different stalls for sale is priceless.
“Give a little of your time and get a lot back,” said Pam.
