Occupational therapy patients at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital competed in the department’s kitchen for the “Cooking with Gadgets” contest.
Head of Occupational Therapy, Vida Yip Cateuax Department, held on October 21, said the purpose of Cooking with Gadgets is to facilitate the patient’s recovery process.

“We started a gadget-based cooking program in 2015. The need arose because patients did not continue with the rehabilitation exercises they learned in the hospital, but instead forgot the exercises at home.”
Yip Cateuax added that the occupational therapy department told patients about the cooking contest, which motivated them to do recovery exercises at home.

Cooking with Gadgets contestant Elvis Tshabalala said he believed he had a good chance of winning the contest.
“Cooking is my passion. I started cooking when I was 7 years old and dreamed of owning a restaurant one day. , I hope that will be the case this time as well.”
Tshabalala joined the culinary program this year and said the stroke he suffered in 2014 will not deter him from his culinary dreams.

The head of occupational therapy explained that the cooking program is important to the progress of the patient’s recovery.

“Since 2016, we have expanded our program to include patients with head, stroke, and hand injuries. We had to, but this is our sixth year running the program.”
The winners of the cooking contest were 1st place Elvis Tshabalala, 2nd place Bilaal Hassim and 3rd place Maruping Mamokere.

Brenda Spence, Manager of the Arthritis Foundation SA Gauteng Chapter, said the foundation was happy to work with the hospital’s occupational therapy department.
