“What I can tell you now is this. Simply put, two of my agents were ambushed and killed tonight,” Owens said. “Two suspects believed to be the perpetrators of this crime are currently in custody and are being held at the Cobb County Police Department for questioning.”
The names of the murdered lawmakers and suspects have not been released.
Multiple Channel 2 Action News reporters are gathering new information for live Team 2 coverage on Channel 2 Action News at 4:00, 5:00, and 6:00.
Owens said the warrant was for failure to appear due to fraudulent theft.
The deputy was ambushed after getting out of the car and beginning to talk to the suspect. One suspect opened fire from a car and a second suspect also from a house.
According to Owens, the two agents had worked for the sheriff’s office for more than five years.
Channel 2 Action News crews on the ground watched as multiple jurisdictions responded to the house where lawmakers were ambushed. The Channel 2 crew were also outside Wellstar Kennestone Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital where deputies were taken.
Hours after SWAT teams responded, the suspect was taken into custody around 12:15 a.m.
Owens said he has no words to express his feelings at this time, but asked for prayers for his representatives.
“Two wives have lost wonderful husbands,” Owens said. “Pray for us because we need it. Our hearts are broken here in Cobb County.”
