Connecticut-based companies are featured in new CNBC rankings of companies focused on workers, wages, and social issues.
CNBC released its 2023 Just 100 list on Jan. 10.
Bank of America Corporation took the top spot, while Verizon Communications and JPMorgan Chase also made the top 10.
As part of its annual analysis of what Americans think are the most important corporate leadership issues, nonprofit Just Capital compiles a list of big companies doing the right thing.
It is the first time in the list’s seven-year history that a bank has taken the top spot. Last year, technology companies took the top four spots.
“This recognition reflects our commitment to responsible growth,” said Brian Moynihan, Chairman and CEO of Bank of America.
“Achieving responsible growth helps create jobs, develop communities, foster economic mobility and address some of society’s greatest challenges.”
Other companies with a presence in Connecticut that made the list include Cigna, Merck & Company, The Hartford Financial Services Group, Wells Fargo, AVANGRID, Amazon, Raytheon Technologies, Lockheed Martin, AT&T, and Synchrony Financial.
Methodology and analysis
This methodology assesses the Russell 1000 companies across 20 key issues, 5 stakeholder groups, and 245 underlying data points.
The top issues in the analysis come from what Americans voted most important.
Paying a fair living wage was the biggest issue and topped this year’s analysis.
Other issues include job creation in the United States, workforce retention and training, ethical leadership, carbon reduction, and pollution prevention.
The national minimum wage for all employees was a new data point for the year when banks performed well. According to analysts, this data point will account for almost half of the average bank rank increase in 2023.
Bank of America had the second highest minimum wage among all companies analyzed.
