Southlake Carrolls (8-0, 5-0) have been traditionally defined by their strong passing game for decades, but the Dragons beat VR Eaton (3-5, 2-3) last Friday.
Recorded 465 yards offensively, the Dragons completed 93 yards on 10 passes, giving Graham Knowles his second career start as quarterback. In stark contrast to past seasons, the Dragons leaned heavily on the ground his game, with 48 rushes for 372 yards and he scored 5 touchdowns.
It took just 12 carries for Owen Allen to rush for 162 yards and 3 touchdowns. The senior is averaging over 13 yards per carry and probably would have continued if his zone hadn’t stopped him at the end of his quarter of carries.
Junior running back James Lehman had the majority of rushing plays in his best stats game of the season. Lehman carried the ball 18 times for 142 yards and set up two punch-in scores for Knowles. Parker Thompson and Todd Mallory added 61 yards of rushing into the mix as the team averaged nearly 8 yards per carry that night.
The defensive line deserves as much applause as the O line. The defense, led by Dragon Pride’s Player of the Week Nigel Fodor, gave up just one late game score, with just 65 rushing yards that night. Fodor filled his stats sheet with 13 tackles, 9 solos and 1 interception. His fellow linebacker Aaron Sherp added nine tackles (eight solo), while Jack Petkus, Wyatt Duffy and Cade Parks each recorded a sack.
The Dragons, currently the 25th team in the country, are outscoring their opponents 393 to 72 and remain undefeated, according to MaxPreps. But the Dragons will need another strong effort this Friday as they take on the hottest offense in North Texas. Trophy club Byron Nelson Bobcats, also undefeated and with his 56-24 win over Keller Central, will face the Dragons at their senior night at Dragon Stadium on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.
