Around the Council Bluffs Area Chamber of Commerce, the third Friday of each month (also known as “Foodie Friday”) is a non-stop time for young professionals to meet and network in a comfortable environment away from the rigors and stress of work. Offers formal occasions.
Hosted by Sara Beth Ray, Director of Finance and Young Professional Engagement at the Chamber, Foodie Friday is an outreach event for Impact CB, the Chamber’s chapter, for young people ages 18-40.
“We started these last January as a way to bring together young professionals in our community to meet and talk to each other,” Ray says. “We see people coming in all the time and talking about their jobs and what they do. It’s always a great opportunity.”
The latest Foodie Friday took place last week at Mercy Thai, a Thai restaurant that opened in late October along the River’s Edge Parkway.

“We like to go to another Chamber of Commerce member’s restaurant in town. We like to hang out and try new places,” Ray said.
Foodie Fridays drew as many as 30 people for food, Ray says, depending on the restaurant and the season.
After the introduction of last week’s seven attendees, there was a bit of chatter — jobs ranging from finance and accounting to journalism and city officials — but it was soon about what brought them all to Council Bluffs. Diverted — multiple participants left home for school and work, and were talking about family, previous jobs, Disneyland, and other common acquaintances.
It is by design and very discreet.
“It’s been a great way to meet people, and we’ve found that the barriers have been lowered for many of our events,” says Ray. “We don’t have programs or event fees, so it’s easy for people to go out and have lunch with us.”
Open for lunch and dinner, Mercy Thai (4104 River’s Edge Parkway) is an affordable and cozy restaurant. Most dishes are under $15 and are hearty. Customers are also asked what their preferred heat level is on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the hottest.
The young professionals who attended Foodie Friday got a variety of dishes, from pad thai to pineapple fried rice, and all left satisfied.
Next month’s Foodie Friday will be held on February 17 at Quaker Steak and Lube at 3320 Mid America Drive.
