MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) — Taste of the Town is back in Myrtle Beach after 38 years.
In 1984, a group of students at St. Andrews Catholic School were looking for creative ways to raise money, and Taste of the Town was born.
About 30 Grand Strand restaurants gather at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Tuesday afternoons for tastings, sipping, live music and bidding in a silent auction. The Crazy Mason, Tidal Creek Brewhouse and JEM Social are just a few of the participating restaurants.
Event chair Rita Hayek said members of the community enjoy Taste of the Town and return every year.
“People love events,” Hayek said. “They thought this event was run by the City of Myrtle Beach.
She said it gives people a chance to get to know the region’s delicious food.
“It’s like going out on the town and going from one restaurant to another,” Hayek said. “You get to hear about new places and, you know, it’s Tuesday night. Usually Tuesdays aren’t much happening around town, so it’s fun.”
Here’s how it works: Attendees purchase food tickets for $1 each. Each ticket pays for everything from appetizers to desserts to authentic appetizers from some of Myrtle Beach’s best restaurants.
The event is a fundraiser for St. Andrews Catholic School and the funds will be used to purchase everything from new technology to security enhancements to new classrooms. Funds will also be used to supplement student scholarships.
“We use the money to improve our facilities,” Hayek said. “Previously, we used that money for a new computer lab and new iPads for the kids. That money went for a safety fence around the school and his two new classrooms.”
Hayek said the school takes great pride in the event and continues to attract volunteers each year.
“We’re proud of it. We’re very proud of it,” Hayek said. “That’s why you have everything [volunteers] here. They don’t get paid for this. They do everything in their free time. Many people are leaving today and tomorrow. We do it to provide a safe environment for our children, and the money helps us do that.
Taste of the Town takes place at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center from 4-10pm. News13 is a proud sponsor.
