Halloween ends director David Gordon Green responded to fan backlash which helped the streaming/theatrical release achieve a 57% viewership score on Rotten Tomatoes and a “C-” rating from TVLine players – even though it became the most-watched movie or series of all time over a two-day period on the Peacock streaming service.
In theatres, Halloween ends opened at a respectable $41.3 million, only to drop more than 80% this weekend.
Asked about the negative comments, Green maintained that he simply made the last episode his own, saying Filmmaker“when someone says, ‘Build your dream house on this real estate using this title and these characters,’ everyone is going to find a little different thing that makes sense to them and they’re going to make it their own. . That’s what I did.
“For every bite of backlash,” he continued, “you also get people thanking you for taking it somewhere new and keeping it alive and full of love.”
Green said that in designing the latest trilogy more closely, the question was, “How can we make this not just a nice, neat arc on a franchise?”, Adding, “we never considered doing a Laurie [Strode] and Michael [Myers] film. The idea that this should be a showdown-type final brawl never even crossed our minds.
Instead, Green decided to tell a ‘love story’ – between Laurie’s granddaughter Alyson (played by Andi Matichak) and Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell), a wrongfully blamed then ostracized babysitter. for the death of a child he was watching – and in doing so explore “what can make the psychopath, without having to go into a psychological Michael Myers backstory”.
Green also revealed that in addition to using the same blue credits font as Halloween III: Season of the Witchan early draft had a much more direct nod to the decades-old franchise’s first non-Michael outing.
“There was an ending that I wrote, that we never filmed, and it takes place at the Silver Shamrock factory as it spits out witch, skeleton, and jack-o-lantern masks… then she started spitting out Michael Myers masks,” Green shared, “but ultimately I thought it was just fan service for people who know what Silver Shamrock is.”
