(CNN) — Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was attacked with a hammer early Friday morning at the couple’s San Francisco home by a male assailant, law enforcement sources told CNN.
Pelosi, 82, was hospitalized but is expected to make a full recovery, the Democratic chairman’s office said in a statement.
The Capitol Police Department issued a statement saying it was assisting the FBI and San Francisco police in a “joint investigation” into the Pelosi home invasion in California.
The statement provided detailed information about how law enforcement responded, noting that a special agent from the USCP’s California Field Office “arrived immediately on the scene and an investigative team from the agency’s Threat Assessment Section was sent to the east.” They were dispatched from the coast at the same time to assist the FBI and the FBI.” San Francisco police conducting a joint investigation. ”
Drew Hamill, a spokesman for Nancy Pelosi, said the perpetrator is in custody and his motives are being investigated.

According to two sources familiar with early details of the incident, the perpetrators broke into the Pelosi residence through the back of the house.
In the absence of House Speaker Pelosi, there would have been no security details at the residence, according to a source familiar with the protocol.
Two law enforcement sources said the home has security cameras, so there may be video available for U.S. Capitol Police and law enforcement to review.
President Joe Biden met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, according to the White House.
“The president is praying for Paul Pelosi and the entire family of House Speaker Pelosi. This morning he called House Speaker Pelosi to express his support after this horrific attack,” said Karine Jean. spokesman Pierre said in a statement.
