Madison, Wisconsin — Grocery prices remain high, but there are a few things you can do to save money at the supermarket.
UW Health Clinical Dietitian Michelle Swayder joins News 3 Now at noon Tuesday to find out why some commodities remain overpriced and how you and your family can save money. I talked about
Here’s why it’s been so high:
- Last year’s bird flu outbreak killed millions of chickens across the country and disposed of them instead of going to the store. it is continuing.
- Gas prices remain high and transportation costs are passed on to consumers. There is also a shortage of truck drivers and people who transport food internationally.
- Russia’s attack on Ukraine continues to affect the country’s wheat and barley exports, which in turn affects the price of available supplies.
There are following ways to save.
- Shop locally, including eggs, meats and cheeses from local shops.
- Create more space in your pantry and freezer by setting up “clean days”.
- Compare prices on your shopping list and shop at multiple stores to get the lowest price for each item.
- Eat less meat.
- Buy generic products that are often the same as big name brands but are up to 25% cheaper.
- Meal planning to prevent overeating, buying unnecessary things, and throwing away unused food.
- Buy non-perishable items in bulk.
- Use canned or frozen vegetables.
- Use the store’s app or rewards program to save a little extra at your most frequented locations.
