Imran Khan was apparently shot in an “assassination attempt”.
Pakistan’s former prime minister was said to have been hit in the leg while marching with supporters, local news outlets reported.
An unidentified gunman opened fire on the former cricketer’s car as it passed Wazirabad.
A senior aide said, “This was an attempt to kill him and assassinate him.”
Sky News reporter Cordelia Lynch just interviewed Khan six days after a protest march from Lahore to Islamabad as part of a campaign to bring early elections to the country after he was ousted from power in April. At the scene, there was a sudden “uproar” after she finished interviewing him about threats of violence during the trek.
She said: “The injured were taken to the ambulance…a lot of panic…people rushing. No one could fully understand what was going on.
“Then Imran Khan appeared. I understand he was shot in the left leg.
“Actually our producer Mohammed could see it. He was very close to Imran Khan when he appeared.
“He was taken away… Three patients were treated by a nearby doctor.
“This was a worst-case scenario. Many people were concerned that this peaceful protest could escalate into violence.”
Farooq Habib of Khan’s Pakistan Teliku-e-Insaf (PTI) party said, “Imran Khan is injured. May Allah protect him. The whole nation prays for Imran Khan’s life.” should.”
A party spokesperson said the 70-year-old politician was “safe” and the suspect was arrested.
“He is in stable condition. A bullet hit him in the leg. He is being transferred to a hospital in Lahore,” the former finance minister said.
