SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – A remote garage in Springfield is believed to have caught fire on Tuesday night after being struck by lightning.
The Springfield Fire Department was called Block 3600 of the Lincoln Trail at approximately 9:40 pm.
The homeowner turned off the electricity and propane gas to the garage.
When the crew arrived, the two-car garage was on fire.
911 Control was unable to locate a hydrant in the area, so a tanker was requested and dispatched from Pleasant Plains.
They were then able to find a fire hydrant and supply water.
The garage had some petrol-powered equipment spewing fire from its tanks, and spilled fuel from the garage passenger car was burning on the garage floor.
Several dry chemical fire extinguishers were used to extinguish those fires.
The garage is drenched with water and foam.
The homeowner said he was sitting inside and saw what appeared to be a bolt of lightning falling into the garage and soon followed by smoke.
Due to the extensive damage and value to the garage and its contents, according to the Springfield Fire, SFD has asked officials to investigate possible causes.
The garage was vandalized and there was a damaged or destroyed brand new pickup truck, electric motorcycle and tools in the garage.
