Choosing pumpkins to decorate their homes is a seasonal tradition for many families. Several farms in the Midlands have encouraged communities to donate pumpkins to feed their livestock rather than throw them away after the season. I’m looking for
The following four farms accept pumpkin donations.
Allen Acres Farm – Columbia, South Carolina
Allen Acres Farm is located near the Lake Murray Dam, and owner Nathan Allen said all animals love to eat pumpkins.
“We usually feed the cows pumpkin, and we also have three pigs and three goats, and they really enjoy pumpkin,” Allen said. “Do not bleach or paint.”
Allen says pumpkin is a healthy treat because it’s a natural deworming agent for many animals.

Beech Creek Farm – Lexington, South Carolina
Beechcreek Farm feeds pumpkins to livestock and poultry. Owner Jill Ellenclaw said fresh squash is a favorite for all livestock this time of year.
Doko Farm – Blythewood, South Carolina
Doko Farm feeds pigs, poultry and even sheep with pumpkins. This year we are only accepting pumpkins that are not carved. Owner Amanda Jones said she prefers to feed the whole pumpkin because pumpkin seeds are believed to contain cucurbitacin, which acts as a deworming agent for livestock. ‘s pumpkin patch also said they could donate leftover pumpkins.
“We are careful not to feed livestock with moldy food. Just like humans, they can get sick,” Jones said. “A rotting pumpkin on someone’s balcony isn’t good for livestock, but it’s great for a compost pile.”
