Students at Donda Academy continue to be affected by Kanye West’s actions. On October 31, Morehouse College announced that it was canceling a tournament involving the Donda Academy basketball team.
The tournament was sponsored by Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics, who once had a business relationship with Kanye and the Donda Academy students. However, after Kanye’s controversial remarks, Brown cut ties with the rapper.
His business relationship ended, but Brown wanted to give the students another chance. After his team was left out of his Scholastic Play By Play Classics tournament last week, basketball Brown stepped in to create a tournament that will take place at Morehouse College on November 6.
However, Morehouse College has issued a statement that the tournament will be cancelled.
“The basketball tournament scheduled for November 6th at Forbes Arena featuring Donda Dubs and Skill Factory has been cancelled. We encourage you to learn more about what prepares men of color for a life of leadership and service, like, honesty in building community with civility.
Throughout its history, Morehouse College, perhaps more than any other institution, has championed social discourses that promote equity and healing, especially in areas involving racial, cultural and socioeconomic disparities. Therefore, Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, cannot accept, either perceived or implied, the recent divisive and unproductive remarks. “
Neither Brown nor Kanye have yet responded to the cancellation at press time.
