The survey, ‘Behaviors and Attitudes of High School Students in Karnataka toward Technology and 21st Century Skills’, was conducted by the non-profit Quest Alliance among 1,572 high school students in Karnataka.
A survey revealed that only 11% of girls and 16% of boys are curious enough to explore the technology behind their everyday gadgets. The survey was conducted in 27 schools in Mysuru and Tumakuru districts of Karnataka.
Presenting the findings at a press conference in Bengaluru on Wednesday, Quest Alliance Director (Schools) Neha Parti said the survey will improve 21st century skills and scientific disposition among rural students. He said it clearly emphasizes the need for improvement.
In this regard, Kantar, a leading global insights company, and IBM, a global technology company, have teamed up to offer STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education among 40,000 high school students in nine districts of Karnataka. Launched a program to promote education. Knowledge Partner Quest Alliance will operate the program in Mysuru, Tumakuru, Bengaluru Rural, Chitradurga, Yadgir, Licher, Gadag, Hassan and Chikkabalapura districts.
“This program provides students with experiential learning through a ‘learning by doing’ approach. This means that these 40,000 high school students of hers will no longer have to memorize complex scientific concepts from textbooks. Through this program, students will have the opportunity to tinker. It’s a technology-based solution to the problems they identified,” he added Neha.
This initiative complements existing school curricula by providing digital fluency, coding, and a scientific temper through hackathons and STEM clubs to advance STEM education for high school students. The program also supports students’ career journeys through scholarships, career counseling, and exemplary interactions with various professionals.

Manoj Balachandran, Head of CSR for IBM India/South Asia, shared his thoughts on collaboration. School-to-pre-college dropout rates are cause for concern, according to Integrated District Information Systems for Education 2019-2020 data. Her 95.8% of girls transition from her 8th grade to her 9th grade, while only 74.7% of her transition from her 10th grade to her 11th grade.
Seventy-one percent of boys said they were naturally better than girls in math and science, and 19% of girls also agreed that boys were better than girls in these subjects. Mr. Neha said these findings reinforce some of the gender stereotypes and therefore it was essential to emphasize the module on gender awareness.
The survey also found that only 66% of students do not fully understand 21st century skills such as communication, critical thinking, and decision making.
Other findings from the survey:
Thirty-nine percent of the female students surveyed said they currently have a personal social media account (Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, etc.) compared to 65% of male students who do not.
65% of female students indicated that they are confident/very confident in using computers, as opposed to 58% of male students.
About 92% of male students and 87% of female students have used the Internet in the past three months to search for more information about the topic they are studying.
