“Punk Food” Dish of the Week
The term “punk food” has been coined to describe “anti-cuisine” cuisine by Atlanta chefs who make the most of the diverse influx of cultures and experiences that live in Atlanta. We chronicle them faithfully in our weekly side dish column Punk Food (subscribe!) and on our website. A few examples from this weekend.
- North Carolina Punk: @sugarloafatl will be at @eventidebrewing in Grant Park on Friday for a North Carolina slow burger. Cajun-spiced beef chili and Tikelgomeng-inspired coleslaw ‘all the way through’ on the bottom, topped with a smashed 4-ounce oar his beef patty. Served with diced white onions, American cheese and yellow mustard. All in a fluffy sesame bun by @tgmbread. Check out their Oklahoma Mashburger too!
- Korean punk: @ganji.atl was at @sceptrebeer all weekend serving up the Pimento Kimcheese Topped Cornbread Spam Jam (an update to a previously featured dish) and Gamja Snack Wraps (cheese potato croquettes wrapped in scallion pancakes). It’s snowing) Sauce and homemade cutlet sauce.
- malaysia punk: @jackalopeatl is serving a new dish on @boggssocial on Fridays and Saturdays called Tamarind BBQ Sandwich, which is pulled BBQ pork dipped in tamarind BBQ sauce served with green papaya coleslaw.
- Asian Super Group Punk: At @julymoonbakeryandcafe in Alpharetta on Sunday, a Vietnamese-Filipino supergroup including @barangayatl, @bamepopup, and @pizza.kusina formed on Sunday to collaborate on a number of dishes, including Pizza Kusina’s pie and mozzarella. I’m here.Capsicum, EVOO, Garlic, Parsley, Fermented Calabrian Chili Paste, Barangay Luc Bun Longganisa Pork Sausage
rare sightings
Some of our favorite popups that we don’t see as often as we’d like:
festival
- FINAL VAHI FOOD TRUCK FRIDAY: Lots of trucks and a nice neighborhood atmosphere.
- sari sari market: In honor of Filipino-American Month, many Filipino chefs will be attending this festival on Saturday. Stop by @baolicious.atl and say hello to Leo from Punk Foodie for help.
- SUDS Decatur Craft Beer Experience: At Legacy Park on Saturdays, you can sample all kinds of craft beer and food around Decatur. I would love to try the fares from @refugeenetwork. Then stop by @brickstorepub to try @heapsatl meat pies and his Giza beer (he’s there on Fridays too).
