ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Dracula takes to the stage as a ballet at the Jefferson Center on Saturday.
The story follows Dracula as he begins his reign of terror after the tragic loss of his wife.
Centuries later, lawyer Jonathan Harker travels to Transylvania to finalize a real estate deal with the Earl.
Dancer Roland Sarabia plays Harker.
“My personality is noble and loyal and very romantic and you know I love my wife. And his personality is really bad and we all know what Dracula is like. I kind of am.” I’m from a town, a village, I go to his palace to sell my house, and he’s trying to kill me, ”explains Sarabia.
Rendering a classic story as a ballet presents challenges, but Sarabia says the audience can follow the plot.
“It’s not easy to put together a great story in ballet. The dancers don’t speak, so you have to imitate the ballet steps,” says Sarabia.
According to Roanoke Ballet Theatre, the cast will consist of more than 50 dancers, including 26 young people from Roanoke Valley.
Saravia says the show is a mix of modern and classic and is a great way for families to enjoy Halloween weekend.
“It’s also very important because it’s a better season to play Dracula than the Halloween season,” says Sarabia.
