Russ Faris’ artwork will be on display at the Eurabus Lewis Art Gallery on the Jones College campus through February 17th. Illustration and print entitled “Saturday Morning Salvation”.
The University of Southern Mississippi alumnus and former Leader-Call cartoonist will share the process of creating his artwork in an “Art Talk” at the Art Gallery on Monday, February 13th at 10am.
“I’ve loved comics since I was a kid,” Faris said. “I taught myself to draw by copying cartoons and coloring pages in books. I draw what makes me happy. It’s what I’ve been doing since I was a kid .”
Originally from Petal and now living in Ellisville, his artwork has always been heavily influenced by comics, cartoons and pop culture. Since his last exhibition at Jones College in 2009, he has focused more on his style. During his college years, Faris believed his work had to be “fine art” until he saw the work of Daniel Johnston. He also used cartoon characters to express himself, and Farris confided in “cartoons” as a way of addressing his own personal views and beliefs.
“I use cartoon characters to connect and express ideas ranging from the philosophical to the absurd,” he said. “I use these characters to express ideas and connect pop culture to other pop culture. I like to draw, I started doing it in a sketchbook a few years ago, but over the years those extra elements have become a symbol of my work.”
Faris teaches art in public schools. While she was working in the news industry, Faris received a #1 award for her cartoon editorial from her association with the Mississippi Press. His work has also been shown at South His University of Alabama, several group exhibitions, and most recently at his Society of Lupercalia Art in Mobile, Alabama, which has sold out almost completely.
