Villicana has been an officer with the department since February 2022, according to the Santa Cruz Police Department. Chief Bernie Escalante said he would support the victim’s family as best he could.

Salinas police said 20-year-old Luis Alfredo Ferro Sánchez died Friday night after a personal gun belonging to a Santa Cruz police officer was accidentally released.
Officers said they responded to reports of an accidental firing of a firearm that caused a gunshot wound at Block 1,500 of Antelope Drive around 5:45 p.m. .
Francisco Villicana, 22, had a gunshot wound to his hand. Both were rushed to a local hospital, and Ferro Sánchez died from his injuries.


Police said Billicana was a police officer in Santa Cruz and was off duty because he was preparing to clean privately owned firearms.
Police said Birikana was handling a firearm when he accidentally fired a single shot. The Salinas Police Department responded and took responsibility for the investigation.
They say it was a tragic accident and will be forwarded to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office for investigation.
