Meta announced that it will be adding some new features to its Facebook Messenger app. The news was announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
This includes new features like chat themes with end-to-end encryption, and we plan to extend end-to-end encryption for chats to more countries.
We have also begun gradually expanding our testing of Messenger’s default end-to-end encryption. We know that people want spaces where they connect, and they want to know that those conversations are private, safe and secure. We have spent time building a team of experts dedicated to deploying default end-to-end encryption in Messenger.
Over the next few months, more and more people will continue to see portions of their chats gradually upgraded with the additional layer of protection provided by end-to-end encryption. People will be notified in these individual chat threads when they are upgraded. I know there are questions about how individual threads are selected and upgraded, so I wanted to clarify that this is a random process. It’s designed to be random so as not to negatively impact your infrastructure or your users’ chat experience. This also ensures that our new end-to-end encrypted threads continue to provide a fast, reliable and rich experience on Messenger.
