STONINTON, Illinois (WAND) – Christian County Sheriff Bruce Kettelkamp told WAND News that one person died after a train collided with railroad equipment in Stonington.
A 69-year-old employee of the Legacy Grain Cooperative has died in a railroad accident while driving a railcar hauler, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office.
Initial investigations suggest that the Norfolk Southern Railway, hauling four empty railcars, headed northeast, and the railcar driver crossed the train’s path, causing a collision. A cooperative employee was confirmed dead at the scene and no other injuries were reported.
A Norfolk Southern representative confirmed that four empty carriages being towed by the NS train derailed as a result of the collision. Norfolk Southern said it would investigate all derailments and report any findings to the Federal Railroad Administration.
An official statement from Norfolk Southern said: “A loss of life is always a tragedy and our thoughts are with this person’s family and colleagues during this extremely difficult time.”
