JOHNSBOROUGH, Tennessee (AP) — A skydiver died after landing hard from a pregame jump at a Tennessee high school football stadium on Friday, officials said.
In a statement, Washington County School Superintendent Jerry Boyd said a diver flew onto the football field at David Crockett High School in the northeastern Tennessee town of Jonesborough. I was on my way from Gray to Daniel Boone High School.
Boyd said the skydiver was a beloved husband, father and grandfather.
“My deepest condolences to the family of the injured skydiver,” Boyd said in a statement.
Greenville company Jump TN told media outlets that a 55-year-old man works for the company and has performed more than 1,500 jumps. Observers and witnesses said the jump and parachute were unharmed and that the plane deployed without incident, the company said.
Authorities have yet to reveal the identity of the skydiver.
After the incident, the skydiver was airlifted to the hospital for his injuries and a moment of silence was held. The football game got off to a late start.
