ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KVIA) — On Nov. 19, 2022, one of the men in a feud between UNM student Brandon Travis and NMSU student-athlete Mike Peake struck a plea bargain, Bernalillo County said. the district attorney said.
Jonathan Smith pleaded guilty to aggravated battery and conspiracy to commit the falsification of evidence.
According to court documents, Smith, another person, and Brandon Travis lured Peake to the UNM campus and hatched a revenge plan to defeat him.
This was in retaliation for an earlier fight in the UNM vs NMSU match in Las Cruces.
After being hit with a bat, the plan was undone when Peak pulled a gun from his waistband and began firing at Travis. According to court documents, Travis returned fire.
Travis died at the scene. Peake was injured but survived.
Smith faces up to three years in prison.
