Chennai: TANGEDCO has launched a free training program for electronics showroom owners and staff to encourage people to use energy efficient appliances to lower their electricity bills.
Training sessions began in October and are being conducted by energy consultants in stores, schools and universities. “The main slogan of the program is ‘Raise your hand, let’s save electricity,'” said a senior Tangedco executive.
Recently, training sessions were held in Chennai and Tiruchy, with Madurai, Coimbatore and Salem likely to be the next cities on the list.
“Central governments give star ratings to home appliances. Higher rated appliances use less power and run more efficiently,” said C Manivanan, an energy consultant. He added that customers can save at least Rs 100 on their electricity bills.
He added, “Through the campaign, customers will be able to purchase high-quality electrical appliances.” A rating given by the Energy Efficiency Authority, overseen by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, signifies a device’s ability to save energy.
How the star rating system works
Each appliance is given a 1 to 5 star rating to indicate its power efficiency. For example, a 5-star air conditioner is more energy efficient than a 3-star air conditioner. A 5-star AC consumes about 1.5 units of power per hour, while a 3-star AC consumes 1.6 units.
