UPDATE (WREX) — A fire at one of Rockford’s iconic restaurants on Thursday night caused nearly $300,000 in damage.
The Rockford Fire Department received a call to a building fire at 4:20 p.m. at the Capri restaurant at 313 East State Street.
According to a release, fire officials said employees in Capri were preparing to open a restaurant and were cooking food when a fire broke out above one of the pizza ovens.
Employees were unable to put out the fire and called 911 when the fire began to spread further into the restaurant.
When the crew arrived, they found large amounts of smoke billowing from three sides and the roof of the building. Fire officials said everyone inside was able to exit the building safely.
Investigators say the cause of the fire was accidental and it took the crew more than four hours to fully extinguish the blaze.
